With all the Ikea Rast hacks showing up on the internet lately, I just had to give it a try. They’re more like the size of an end table than a chest of drawers, but just the right size for an empty alcove in the hall.
At only $29.99 think of the possibilities with this little pine lovely! When I saw it paint wasn’t the first thing that came to mind. Nope. I thought about all the fabric I have hanging out in my closet. In particular the Cat’s Cradle I had left over from this project.
I have been wanting to incorporate a little more of the persimmon color into the room, and knew just the place to do it! The Rast! But first, a black lacquer finish, courtesy of my staff who just happened to be painting a black automotive finish the day I showed up with my spray cans. No way I could ever duplicate a professional finish with a spray can!
Next, I cut and adhered the fabric to the drawer fronts with spray adhesive.
All ready to assemble the drawers.
I found the perfect knobs at Hobby Lobby for $1.50 each. These Anthropologie pulls were my first choice, but at $8 each they stayed at the store.
That’s the reflection of the baseboard in the mirror finish!
Smoother than a baby’s behind….
Total cost of the project: Under $40, plus tax.
The same price I paid for the little lamp from Home Goods.
You can see a whole bunch of Ikea Rast pictures and links here. But the one that got my wheels turning was this Dorothy Draper chest look-alike. Amazing!
Be sure not to miss all the great projects at Between Naps on the Porch this week. So much inspiration!

Lovely… And fabric to cover drawers is a great idea!
I can’t get over the finish. Amazing. Fun stuff and the color is so cherry.
That is a great job. Clever design and turned out with wondeful eye appeal.
OMG…can I have it??? What a great job and the other ideas are also great. I purchased a $60 file cabinet to use as a dresser in my guest room and it is still perfect. Never thought of “dressing” it though.
Its gorgeous. I cant get over it. I’m so glad you tried it.
your work always looks so professional, warm, and inviting! i love that chair, and the drawer, what a great idea!!
That is AWESOME!!! Fabulous idea wrapping with fabric! Thanks for the shout-out too!
Will have to have another Rast round-up soon to feature yours!

GRRR: I tried to post yesterday and it was not working. NOW, I have done this but I cut mine to fit and modge podged on! yours is lovely and perfect in that spot!
